Annapurna at Christmas
This classic lodge trek reaches the heart of the mountains after only a few days and offers exciting close encounters with the vast south face of Annapurna 1 and the distinctive ‘fish tail’ of Machapuchare. At Christmas the weather is usually settled with fine clear days and cold nights, and there are few other trekkers on the trail. After visiting Annapurna and Machapuchare Base Camps, we return via Ghorepani and Poon Hill, from which we expect a magnificent panorama.
We fly from Kathmandhu to Pokhara, then head through rhododendron forest towards the snowy giants ahead, passing through traditional Gurung, Magar and Thakali villages along the way. Some of the days are fairly strenuous with ups and downs thrown in to increase the challenge - but the altitude isn’t excessive and the pace will be slow and steady.
Standing in the Sanctuary, a natural amphitheatre formed by 6-8000m peaks, is a memory to treasure forever and we have allowed two nights at the highest lodge to allow enough time in this dramatic mountain setting to absorb it all.
